PA37 1PX
Cruise Description
As we have done for the last 50 years, Penguins are returning to traditional grounds for their Easter 2022 cruise – the wild and magnificent west coast of Scotland and the Hebridean Islands. We’ll embark at the familiar Dunstaffnage Marina, near Oban. From this convenient stepping off point, our possible cruising area ranges north to Loch Broom and Ullapool, west to the remote anchorages of the Outer Hebrides and south, possibly as far as the Mull of Kyntyre.
Sail in some of the world’s best cruising grounds
The actual itinerary in April will be strongly influenced by the weather but, however the wind is blowing, the possible locations to visit and anchor are endless. They include the Isle of Skye, the Isle of Iona, the Small Isles such as Canna, as well as beautiful anchorages like Tinker’s Hole, Acairseid Mhor, and Puilladobhrain.
Look out for vibrant marine life
Wherever our course takes us, there are plentiful opportunities to
see wildlife. Penguin crews regularly report sightings of marine animals
including orca and minke whales, dolphins, otters, guillemots, puffins
and white-tailed eagles. And it’s always worth keeping a look out for
golden eagles and wild geese on a fly-by. Who knows, maybe we’ll spot
Wally the Walrus heading back down south for his spring 2022 vacation.
Join a shore party
Those who like an interesting shore trip may feel the magnetic pull
of the distilleries of Tobermory, Talisker, and the Isles of Raasay,
Jura and Islay. Or they may be just as enchanted by the possibility of
exploring the silver Am Mialagan beach at Sanday, Canna, setting foot on
the Shiants, or watching the sea sparkle with bioluminescence on a
starry night.
Take a dip?
Even at sub 10ºC sea temperatures, some hardy Penguins have been
known to willingly take the plunge into crystal Hebridean waters at
Skye’s Loch Scavaig and Mull’s Tinker’s Hole. Maybe the urge will grab
you too.
The Boats
We have reserved four boats from Alba Sailing based in Dunstaffnage Marina – three Sun Odysseys and a Westerly. Each boat has four cabins and offers seven berths. Alba is a friendly and reliable charterer that we have used in previous years. Our experience is that their boats are well maintained and well founded
Boat NameTypeCabins/BerthsBerths OfferedExplorer of SleatSun Odyssey 4394/107EloiseSun Odyssey 43DS4/107ChantillySun Odyssey 434/107OceanlordWesterly 414/107
Young persons crew
All Penguins have a youthful outlook, but this year we hope to crew one of our boats with a younger age profile crew (from 18 and possibly up to mid 30s). So, if you fit this profile and would like to sail with a younger crew then please sign up. Or if you know someone that may fit the profile and may be interested, do let them know about this trip.
Note that many Penguins will traditionally meet up on the evening of Good Friday for a pre-voyage meal near the marina. On the Saturday morning the skippers may organise a shopping trip to buy the supplies for the boats. Details of these activites will be circulated nearer the departure date.
Every Penguin Easter Cruise is different, so a unique experience is always guaranteed, often creating a rich store of memories to take home. Hope to see you at Dunstaffnage Marina at Easter 2022.
Costs
The proposed fee for this voyage is £510. This includes the charter of the boat, safety equipment, dinghy and outboards and the victualling of the boat.
The voyage fee does not include travel to and from Dunstafnage, bedding on board, foul weather gear, or any pre-and post cruise accommodation.
Travel
The embarkation location is Alba Sailing, Dunstaffnage Marina, Oban. PA37 1PX. It is about 3 miles outside of Oban.
By Car
From Oban and the South follow the A85 to Fort William for about three miles. Dunstaffnage Marina is by the road on the left hand side just after the turning for Dunbeg and Dunstaffnage Castle.
From Glasgow/Fort William and the North follow the road to Oban and two miles past Connel see Dunstaffnage Marina on the right hand side next to the road.
By Train and Coach
Oban can be easily reached by train from Glasgow or by timetabled coaches from Glasgow or Inverness. From Aberdeen you can travel by train via Dundee and Glasgow.
Note:
This application form collects information to help us to allocate crews for the yachts chartered for this cruise. The completion of the form and payment of the deposit do not guarantee a place on the cruise until such times as the Committee have ensured that each yacht has a good balance of skills and experience. However, the minimum deposit is only refundable if you are NOT offered a place on this cruise.

Penguins plan a long-awaited return to the Norfolk Broads in 2022. Four traditional Broads sailing craft have been chartered for this adventure which will appeal to the young and young at heart alike.
